Earths Magnetic Field Detector

Earths Magnetic Field Detector

Item code
JUPEMD

Most students will be aware of the presence of the Earth's magnetic field having viewed the needle of a compass as it is rotated.  Many will also have seen a generator in action and noted the electricity generated by the movement of a wire in the vicinity of a magnet.  However, they may not be aware that the Earth's magnetic field is also capable of producing electricity similar to that from a generator.

This may be easily and simply demonstrated with the Earth's Magnetic Field Detector.  By rotating the detector through the Earth's magnetic field, an emf may easily be generated.

The operators swing the detector as they would a skipping rope and as it cuts through the Earth's magnetic field, a small emf is produced which can be measured with a sensitive voltmeter. With the operators standing about 2.5 meters apart, the detector will cut through an area of about 2.25 square meters. The two operators should orientate themselves until the swinging detector cuts the Earth's magnetic field in such a way that the maximum emf is achieved. A sensitive voltmeter or multimeter needed. Instructions included.
