SOUND IN VACUUM APPARATUS
(SVA002)

The Sound in Vacuum Apparatus has been specifically designed for demonstrating that sound requires a medium such as air for it to be transmitted. The apparatus consists of an evacuation tube with an built-in microphone and a speaker mounted nearby which projects sound into the evacuation tube. Unlike conventional methods of demonstrating sound in a vacuum such as a bell in ajar which can sometimes be less than convincing, the Sound in Vacuum Apparatus uses a microphone to put the listener inside the vacuum without them physically having to be in the vacuum. A speaker mounted next to the evacuation tube produces a sound which the microphone detects and the amplitude of the resultant signal is displayed on a CRO.
